Son Heung-Min dives into LAFC’s player-run NFL fantasy league despite knowing virtually nothing about American football. The South Korean forward shares his confusion, hilarious moments, and how teammates continue to offer him questionable advice.
Son Heung-Min has embraced the lighter side of life at LAFC, participating in the team’s NFL fantasy league despite having no clue about the sport or its fantasy counterpart. The South Korean superstar, who joined the MLS club in early August, admitted that his understanding of American football is virtually non-existent. Yet, he was still eager to get involved in the team’s fun and quirky tradition.
What Happened?
Son, who is renowned for his footballing brilliance, was reluctant to let his lack of knowledge stop him from bonding with his new teammates. However, his dive into the world of NFL fantasy football has been far from smooth.
“I’m in the fantasy league, so we’re competing, but still, I have no idea what’s going on,” Son said with a laugh during an interview with MLS Countdown. “But I’m still fond of it, I think it’s great to have a social life with the teammates. It’s a great idea to join in, and obviously, I’ve enjoyed every single moment talking with the players.”
Son continued to explain how his teammates, including Aaron Long and Ryan Hollingshead, have been sending him what he describes as “bad trades,” in an effort to complicate his fantasy decision-making. “They tried something bad on me, but I was strong, I stuck with my team,” he chuckled.
The First Pitch vs. His MLS Debut
When asked whether he was more nervous for his MLS debut or throwing out the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game, Son’s response was telling. “I think it’s an easy answer, the Dodgers. The first pitch was, oh my god. I was so nervous, I think it’s one of the most I’ve been. But yeah, now I’m here to play soccer, I can concentrate.”
LAFC’s Playoff Push
As LAFC prepares for back-to-back games against Real Salt Lake later this month, they sit fifth in the Western Conference, five points behind third-place Vancouver Whitecaps. Son’s involvement with the team, on and off the field, has surely added to the team’s spirit as they push for a playoff spot.
What’s Next for Son and LAFC?
Following their 3-1 victory over San Jose Earthquakes, LAFC’s focus shifts to crucial upcoming matches. Their push for the playoffs continues, with games scheduled against Real Salt Lake on September 21 and 27, followed by a home match against Atlanta United on October 5.
