Spain Confident and Composed Ahead of EURO 2025 Clash with England

With the stakes sky-high and football fans around the world eagerly awaiting a blockbuster showdown, Spain are keeping their cards close to the chest ahead of their UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final against England this Sunday in Basel. Though tight-lipped about tactical expectations, Spanish midfield maestro Alexia Putellas made it clear—La Roja are primed and ready for whatever challenges the Lionesses bring to the pitch.

A Tactical Chess Match in the Making

As anticipation builds for this high-profile rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, both camps are locked in preparation. While England enters as the defending European champions, Spain holds the momentum of being current world and Nations League titleholders. Still, Putellas isn’t underestimating the versatility of Sarina Wiegman’s squad.

“England can approach games in different ways—they might sit back in a low block or come forward with pressure. Either way, we’re a team with many tools,” Putellas told reporters at Spain’s base in Lausanne on Thursday. “If they defend deep and try to hit us on the counter, we’ve proven before that we can still find goals. We’re well-balanced and confident in our ability to adapt.”

Spain’s Measured Approach Bearing Fruit

Throughout their EURO 2025 campaign, Spain have shown a tendency to grow into games rather than dominate from the outset. While their starts have been cautious, their control in possession and tactical discipline have gradually worn opponents down. That adaptability, according to Putellas, will be key in Sunday’s final.

“It’s difficult to take the ball from us when we’re focused,” she said. “We’ve prepared for every possible scenario.”

A Familiar Rivalry Rekindled

Sunday’s clash in Basel marks another chapter in an increasingly competitive rivalry. The two sides last met in June during the Nations League, where Spain edged out England 2-1. Just four months earlier, England had taken the spoils with a 1-0 win. But perhaps most memorably, Spain defeated the Lionesses 1-0 in the 2023 World Cup final.

Despite recent success, Putellas is staying grounded. “I try not to dwell on what we’ve done or haven’t done. These moments are special and we’re fully focused on living them to the fullest,” she said.

History Within Reach

As Spain eyes another major international title, the squad’s hunger and ambition are unmistakable. Putellas, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner and one of the most experienced players in the squad, says the team is fueled by its passion and purpose.

“We’re excited, ambitious, and energized by the opportunity to keep making history. That motivation pushes us to reach our goal,” she concluded.
