Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, have received a hero’s welcome and a wave of national accolades following their stunning comeback win over Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. In recognition of their record-breaking 10th continental title, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed national honours and substantial financial rewards upon the squad, cementing their place as national icons.
A Night to Remember in Rabat
The Super Falcons delivered a performance for the ages, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat tournament hosts Morocco 3-2 in a dramatic final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. The victory not only reclaimed the WAFCON crown from rivals South Africa but also extended Nigeria’s dominance in the competition with their 10th championship win since their first in 1998.
Led by head coach Justine Madugu, the team’s resilience and fighting spirit captured the hearts of millions, bringing unity and pride to a nation.
Presidential Recognition for Sporting Excellence
In a special ceremony held at the Presidential Villa on Monday, President Tinubu honored each member of the victorious squad with the national title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). The same recognition was extended to the team’s technical crew, acknowledging the collective effort behind the Super Falcons’ historic win.
But the accolades didn’t stop there. As part of the government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, every player and technical staff member will receive a three-bedroom apartment, a lasting symbol of national gratitude.
Generous Cash Bonuses for Players and Coaches
In addition to the national honours and housing allocations, President Tinubu approved generous cash awards:
- $100,000 (in naira equivalent) for each of the 24 players
- $50,000 for each technical crew member
These financial rewards serve both as a celebration of the team’s hard-fought victory and an incentive for future success on the international stage.
President Tinubu: “You Inspired a Nation”
Speaking during the reception, President Tinubu expressed heartfelt admiration for the team, saying they had “inspired millions, especially young girls,” and ignited hope across Nigeria. Recounting the emotional rollercoaster of the final match, the President shared a personal anecdote, admitting he initially avoided watching due to nerves.
“I didn’t want to have high blood pressure,” Tinubu joked, recalling his restlessness when the team trailed by two goals. But as the match turned in Nigeria’s favor, he said, “my strength was lifted, and I believe that of the nation was lifted too.”
He also mentioned the First Lady’s excitement during the match, revealing how she nearly abandoned her kitchen duties to cheer on the team — a testament to the nationwide passion the Super Falcons have ignited.
