Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a move for Lazio centre-back Mario Gila, with manager Thomas Frank eager to reinforce his back line following a strong start to the Premier League campaign. However, Spurs face stiff competition from several domestic rivals also monitoring the former Real Madrid talent.

Spurs’ Defensive Resurgence Under Thomas Frank

Tottenham have enjoyed a dramatic turnaround this season under Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou after a disappointing 17th-place finish last term. The North London club currently sit third in the Premier League table, winning four of their opening seven matches and boasting one of the division’s tightest defences—conceding just five goals so far.

Their strong form has extended beyond domestic play, as Spurs have dropped only two points in their first two Champions League group stage games and comfortably advanced in the League Cup. Despite this early-season success, Frank remains keen to add depth and quality to his defensive unit.

Mario Gila Emerges as a Key Target

According to TBR Football, Tottenham have joined the pursuit of 25-year-old Lazio centre-back Mario Gila. The Spanish defender has been ever-present in Serie A this season, missing just six minutes of league action while helping his side to two clean sheets.

Gila, a product of Real Madrid’s system, has impressed with his composure and positioning, drawing the attention of multiple Premier League clubs seeking defensive reinforcements. Spurs view him as a potential complement to their in-form centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Premier League Clubs Battle for Gila’s Signature

Tottenham aren’t alone in their admiration for Gila. Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Everton are also reported to be tracking the Spaniard after a string of consistent performances in Italy. Bournemouth previously entered discussions over a summer move, as they looked to replace Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi, but were unable to finalise a deal.

With multiple English clubs expressing interest, Tottenham’s main advantage may lie in their European credentials. Gila has limited experience in the UEFA Champions League, featuring mainly in the Europa League and Conference League throughout his career. The opportunity to play in Europe’s top-tier competition could prove decisive in swaying his decision.

Gila’s Rising Profile Boosts Market Value

Earlier this year, Gila received a call-up to the Spanish national team—an indication of his growing status. A move to the Premier League, particularly to a club competing in the Champions League, could strengthen his case for regular international selection.

While Lazio have not publicly named a price tag, growing interest from across the league may drive up the defender’s value. Tottenham must act quickly if they wish to beat their rivals to a deal for the emerging talent.
