Virgil van Dijk has described the aftermath of Diogo Jota’s tragic death as a “surreal” period for Liverpool’s players, admitting the squad is struggling to continue with their work amid the profound loss. Jota, who tragically passed away in a car crash last month, will be honoured throughout the season, with the Reds determined to carry his legacy forward on and off the pitch.

Liverpool’s players continue to come to terms with the devastating loss of Diogo Jota, with Virgil van Dijk speaking candidly about the “surreal” experience of trying to carry on with their professional lives following the tragic death of their teammate. Jota, 26, was involved in a car accident last month while on his way back to pre-season training. The vehicle, reportedly caused by a blown tire, caught fire, and tragically took both Jota’s life and that of his brother, Andre. Jota had been recovering from a lung operation and was unable to fly, leading him to travel by road to a ferry port, where the crash occurred.

Van Dijk, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, described the situation as deeply challenging for the entire squad, acknowledging the profound pain felt by Jota’s family—especially his wife, Rute, and their children. The Liverpool captain stated, “We cannot imagine their pain in this moment. It’s still a bit surreal, to be honest. But as a team, we are trying to cope in the best way possible.” The grief is palpable, but the players have remained united in their determination to honour Jota’s memory.

It’s been strange to try to carry on with work, with football, after something so tragic. But we are doing our best, and we will always remember Diogo. We will honour his memory on the pitch, day in and day out

Liverpool FC has been extremely supportive throughout this difficult time, and plans are in place to commemorate Jota’s life and legacy throughout the season. The club is committed to paying tribute to the late forward not just in the coming months but for as long as possible. Van Dijk emphasized that Jota’s family remains the focal point, with the squad offering their support as much as they can. He added,

It’s difficult to process, but we just try to be there for each other, and for Diogo’s family.

Jota’s time at Liverpool was marked by significant success, having joined the club in 2020. In his three years at Anfield, he made 131 appearances and was integral in helping the Reds secure an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Premier League title. His passing has undoubtedly left a void, both in the dressing room and in the hearts of the Liverpool faithful.

As Liverpool prepares to return to Anfield for the first time since Jota’s passing, they will face Athletic Club, and the squad is motivated to play in his memory. Van Dijk urged the club’s supporters to stand united in this difficult time, showing solidarity with Jota’s loved ones and continuing to cherish the memory of their fallen teammate.
