In a surprising move, Wolverhampton Wanderers have handed Vitor Pereira a new three-year contract, despite the club sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table. The Portuguese manager, who led the club to safety last season, will stay at Molineux until 2028, with chairman Jeff Shi expressing confidence in his leadership.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that Vitor Pereira has signed a new three-year contract with the club, extending his stay until 2028 despite the team’s disappointing start to the current Premier League season.
Pereira, who took over at Molineux in December 2024, guided Wolves to safety last season, steering them from 19th to 16th in the table. However, with Wolves yet to earn a point after four games this season and sitting at the bottom of the table, many were left questioning the decision to offer Pereira a contract extension.
Pereira’s Show of Faith
Despite the team’s struggles, Wolves have placed their trust in Pereira, offering him a new deal to ensure stability and long-term planning. The 57-year-old Portuguese manager spoke highly of his connection with the club and expressed his ambition to improve the team’s fortunes.
In a statement to the club’s website, Pereira said:
I’m very proud to be Wolves head coach. It’s an honour for me. This is the club that gave me the chance to come to the Premier League, the best league in the world. The people here embraced me as a member of the family, me and my staff feel very good in the city, among the supporters. That’s why I really believe that with our work, with our supporters, with the support of the club, the fans and the city together, we will do it. We will increase our level, with ambition to make our supporters proud on the pitch.
Chairman’s Backing
Wolves’ chairman Jeff Shi also expressed confidence in Pereira’s leadership, highlighting his positive impact since arriving. Shi pointed out Pereira’s record-breaking run of six consecutive Premier League wins last season and the Manager of the Season nomination he earned for his efforts.
Vitor has made a very positive impact during his time at Wolves, said Shi. He’s brought clarity, energy, and a team spirit that gives us a foundation to be successful. What he achieved last season was excellent, and now is a time for stability. Vitor needs time to work with the squad, to build chemistry with new players, and we will do everything to support him and his staff.
Challenges Ahead for Pereira and Wolves
Despite the faith shown in Pereira, Wolves have had a challenging summer, losing key players such as Mateus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri. These departures leave Pereira with a thinner squad to work with, and the club’s position at the foot of the table adds pressure to the upcoming matches.
Wolves’ next fixture sees them face Leeds United in a crucial clash at home, where Pereira will be hoping to earn his first points of the season. The coming weeks could determine whether the decision to back the manager in tough times will pay off.
