As Newcastle United gear up for a challenging Premier League clash against Brighton, manager Eddie Howe has shared encouraging updates on key squad members and discussed the club’s latest backroom addition. With Yoane Wissa progressing in his recovery and Jacob Ramsey gaining fitness, the Magpies look to build momentum. Howe also reflected on last season’s crucial draw with Brighton and shared his thoughts on the arrival of sporting director Ross Wilson.

Wissa Back on the Grass as Recovery Progresses

Newcastle summer signing Yoane Wissa is edging closer to full fitness after suffering a knee injury during international duty with DR Congo. The winger, who joined from Brentford, has yet to make his debut for the club, but signs are positive.

“He’s back on the grass, which is a great step,” Howe confirmed. “It’s now about gradually increasing his workload. The timeline hasn’t changed, but this is real progress.”

Wissa’s return could offer Howe a much-needed boost in attack, especially with a congested fixture list on the horizon.

Jacob Ramsey Making Strides in Training

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey is also nearing a return to action. After missing games due to injury, the young playmaker has resumed full training during the international break.

“He’s looked good,” said Howe. “He trained a couple of times before the break, but we didn’t want to rush him. Now, he’s had time to build up, and I’m pleased with his current condition.”

Ramsey’s return could add depth and dynamism to the midfield as Newcastle seek to maintain their competitive edge.

Looking Ahead to Brighton: A Crucial Encounter

Newcastle travel to Brighton this weekend in a matchup that brings back memories of a key point last season. Reflecting on their previous meeting at the Amex Stadium, Howe emphasized its significance in their Champions League qualification campaign.

“At the time, that draw felt frustrating, but looking back, it was a valuable point,” he said. “Brighton are always tough opponents—well-coached and packed with quality.”

The Seagulls, known for their attacking style and tactical flexibility, present a consistent challenge for the Magpies, who are aiming to solidify their top-six credentials.

Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon Impressing at Club and Country

Howe also reserved praise for two of his England internationals, Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon, both of whom have shown strong early-season form.

On Burn, Howe said: “Dan’s commitment is second to none. Playing left-back is physically demanding, but he’s adapted well and continues to give everything for the team.”

Gordon, despite an early-season setback due to a red card and subsequent suspension, has also caught the manager’s eye.

“He had a great start, playing as a centre forward, and has carried that form into his England performances,” Howe added. “He’s growing in confidence and consistency.”

Ross Wilson Takes Charge Behind the Scenes

This week also marked a significant development off the pitch, as Ross Wilson was appointed Newcastle’s new sporting director. Wilson arrives from Nottingham Forest, bringing experience from various roles across British football.

Howe welcomed the move, saying: “I’ve known Ross for a while—though only in passing—but his track record speaks for itself. He’s integrated well already and brings a positive energy.”

While Howe wasn’t deeply involved in the recruitment process, he expressed full support for the hire.

“In a club this size, you need strong leadership across departments,” he said. “There’s so much involved—contracts, scouting, planning. I can’t cover it all. Ross and David [likely referencing a fellow executive] are key to shaping our long-term vision.”

Howe underlined the importance of having dedicated personnel to oversee the strategic aspects of the club, ensuring Newcastle remain competitive on and off the field.
