With the new Premier League season fast approaching, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is growing increasingly frustrated over the club’s lack of progress in the transfer market. Despite identifying a striker and a goalkeeper as top priorities after last season, United have yet to deliver—raising concerns about the squad’s readiness ahead of their opening clash with Arsenal.

Amorim’s Transfer Wishlist Remains Unfulfilled

As soon as last season wrapped up on May 25, Ruben Amorim made it clear to Manchester United’s hierarchy that bolstering the attack and securing a dependable goalkeeper were essential for the club’s next step forward. Yet, as pre-season preparations begin, neither demand has been met—worsening the Portuguese coach’s concerns about squad strength.

Striker Search Falls Short

Manchester United’s attacking recruitment has not matched Amorim’s vision. Although the club completed a move for Matheus Cunha and is close to securing Bryan Mbeumo, the manager still lacks the commanding No.9 he had requested. Amorim was particularly keen on Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres—both proven goal-getters with physical presence and consistency.

However, the club’s interest drifted instead toward younger and less experienced options like Liam Delap, a move Amorim opposed, believing it would not sufficiently elevate the team’s level.

Compounding the issue, none of United’s existing forwards—Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Højlund, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, or Antony—have been offloaded. Amorim had hoped for at least two departures by now to create space and flexibility in the attack. Internal talks suggest the club is now under pressure to finalize at least one forward exit before their upcoming U.S. tour.

Goalkeeping Concerns Deepen

The situation between the posts is no better. Andre Onana, who was already under scrutiny following a string of inconsistent performances last season, is now sidelined with injury and expected to miss the pre-season schedule. While there is no reported rift between Amorim and Onana, the manager has grown dissatisfied with the Cameroonian’s inability to execute fundamental tasks consistently—particularly in building from the back.

Manchester United had been open to offers for Onana this summer, and while there were discussions with intermediaries, no formal bids have materialized. Making matters more complicated, Onana’s camp has indicated he is not actively seeking a transfer, tying the club’s hands in terms of upgrading the position.

Despite that, United remain committed to bringing in competition for the No.1 shirt. Amorim has made it clear that any new goalkeeper must be capable of challenging—or even replacing—Onana.

United Exploring Alternatives in Goal

While young keepers like Radek Vitek, Altay Bayindir, and 19-year-old Elyh Harrison may feature in pre-season, none are considered ready to take on the starting role. United have held talks with the representatives of Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp) and John Victor (Botafogo), indicating a shortlist is being narrowed down. Club sources insist a signing is imminent.

The Clock Is Ticking for Manchester United

With less than a month before United face Arsenal in their Premier League opener, Amorim is calling for urgency. The current squad lacks the balance and reliability he needs to approach the new campaign with confidence. Unless the club accelerates its transfer activity, United risk starting the season unprepared at both ends of the pitch.
