Bruno Fernandes Weighs Future Away from Old Trafford with Eyes on New Challenge

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly considering a move away from the club at the end of the season, as interest from Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer (MLS), and other European leagues continues to mount. While the Portuguese midfielder remains committed to the current campaign, he has not ruled out exploring a new chapter in his career—provided the timing aligns with his international ambitions.

Growing Uncertainty Over Fernandes’ Future

Following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Fulham, where Fernandes missed a crucial penalty, scrutiny over his role at Manchester United has intensified. The midfielder, who has been a pivotal figure at the club since his arrival in 2020, has come under fresh criticism, particularly regarding how he fits into manager Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup.

Amorim’s preference for a rigid 3-4-3 formation has reportedly sparked internal debates about Fernandes’ long-term role, with some suggesting the club should consider parting ways with their influential skipper.

Previous Saudi Offer Turned Down—But Future Still Open

Last summer, Fernandes was approached by Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal with a lucrative deal reportedly worth £200 million over three years. While his agent held discussions with club representatives, Fernandes ultimately chose to stay in Manchester, citing a desire to compete at the highest level.

However, according to a report from the Daily Mail, the 30-year-old is now “open” to the idea of leaving United after the 2024–25 season concludes. His primary concern is to avoid disrupting his chances of being selected for Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad, making a mid-season transfer highly unlikely.

MLS and Europe Also in the Mix

Saudi Arabia isn’t the only possible destination for the Portuguese international. Fernandes is reportedly considering options in Major League Soccer, with several clubs expressing interest. Additionally, opportunities within Europe remain viable, should the right project present itself.

Despite this growing external interest, Manchester United are said to be surprised by the speculation. Sources from the Manchester Evening News claim the club is “baffled” by the sudden noise around Fernandes’ future and insist a departure before the September 1 transfer deadline is “highly unlikely.”

Fernandes Committed—But Ambitious

Currently earning £280,000 per week, Fernandes’ contract at United runs through June 2027, with an option to extend for another year. While he remains focused on the season ahead, he hasn’t hidden his desire for top-level football.

Manchester United said they didn’t want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn’t need the money. I want to play at the highest possible level. I want to play major competitions, and I know I still can.

Fernandes explained, Speaking to the BBC earlier this year

His comments reflect a player still passionate about performing at the peak of world football—whether that be in Manchester or elsewhere in the near future.
