Arsenal kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday night, but not every player impressed in the European spotlight. While second-half substitute Gabriel Martinelli stole the show with a goal and high-energy performance, summer signing Ebere Eze came under criticism for a subdued outing that raised questions about his readiness for top-tier European competition.

Martinelli Makes His Mark in Minutes
Despite a slow start from the Gunners, Mikel Arteta’s side managed to pull away late in the second half thanks to fresh legs from the bench. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard were instrumental in securing the win, both scoring within the final 20 minutes.

Martinelli, who has faced criticism for an underwhelming start to the season, responded in emphatic fashion. Coming on as a substitute, the Brazilian made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net with one of his first touches—reminding fans and critics alike of his quality and attacking prowess.

Eze’s Champions League Challenge
In contrast, Ebere Eze, making his Champions League debut, struggled to adapt to the pace and intensity of the match. Starting ahead of Martinelli, the England international looked off the pace and failed to influence the game, prompting strong post-match criticism from pundits.

Martinelli did more in five minutes than Eze did in 70 minutes… You’re now playing big boy football in the Champions League. If you want to compete, you have to be quicker, you have to be better than he showed tonight.

Speaking on TNT Sports, former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman didn’t mince words:

McManaman acknowledged Eze’s talent and potential before the match, describing him as a “magnificent signing” and a “potential world superstar.” However, he emphasized that stepping up to Champions League level will require Eze to significantly raise his game.

Arsenal Pleased with Martinelli’s Mentality
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also weighed in, offering insight into Arsenal’s internal view on Martinelli following his stellar cameo. In a Q&A session with GiveMeSport, Romano stated:

[Arsenal are] very happy [with Martinelli]. Top mentality, coming off the bench in a fantastic way. Arsenal are very happy with Gabriel.

Martinelli’s response to being benched speaks volumes about his professionalism and hunger, traits that could prove crucial as Arsenal look to go deep in European competition this season.

A Bargain at the Back: Mosquera Impresses Early
Romano also provided an update on new defensive signing Cristhian Mosquera, who joined Arsenal from Valencia over the summer for £13 million. The young centre-back has reportedly impressed behind the scenes, with sporting director Andrea Berta believing the club secured an excellent deal.

He’s an excellent defender and signing him for £13m is more than a bargain.

Romano noted, adding to the growing optimism around the club’s summer business.
