As England prepares for a highly anticipated EURO 2025 final clash against Spain, captain Leah Williamson has emphasized the importance of delivering a flawless performance to overcome the reigning world champions. With both sides locked in an evolving rivalry, the stage is set for a blockbuster showdown at St Jakob-Park in Basel this Sunday.

England Embraces the Challenge of Facing World Champions

Speaking ahead of the final, Leah Williamson praised Spain for their consistent dominance in international football but remained confident in her team’s ability to match them.

“Spain are an outstanding team—they’ve shown that time and time again,” Williamson said. “But we believe in our own strengths as well. We’ll have to be at our best to beat them, and I think they’ll need to bring their best to beat us, too.”

The Lionesses are aiming to defend their European title after winning EURO 2022 on home soil. Sunday’s final is also a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, where Spain edged England 1-0 in Sydney—a result that still fuels the fire between the two teams.

A Fierce and Growing Rivalry

The England-Spain rivalry has intensified in recent years. Their upcoming final marks the latest chapter in a series of tightly contested battles. England famously knocked Spain out in the quarter-finals of EURO 2022 with an extra-time winner. Since then, the two teams have split results in the UEFA Nations League this year.

England secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Wembley in February, only for Spain to hit back in Barcelona with a 2-1 win, led by Claudia Pina’s brace. These encounters have highlighted both the balance of power and tactical adaptability between the sides.

“We’ve learned a lot from our recent meetings,” said England manager Sarina Wiegman. “This game presents a new opportunity. If we can limit their strengths and capitalize on our own, we’re in with a real chance.”

Injury Updates and Key Players to Watch

A major concern heading into the final has been the fitness of winger Lauren James, who suffered an ankle injury during the semi-final win over Italy. However, Wiegman offered a positive update.

“All 23 players trained today and came through fine,” the Dutch coach confirmed, signaling that James is likely available for selection.

Meanwhile, Chloe Kelly and rising star Michelle Agyemang have bolstered their case for starting roles after impressive performances off the bench in recent matches. Williamson, though, highlighted James’ unique impact.

“Lauren brings something a bit different to the team,” said the Arsenal defender. “Having her fit and available is the best-case scenario for us.”

England Eyeing Back-to-Back Titles

With momentum building and key players finding form at the right time, England is poised to challenge Spain for continental supremacy. While both teams bring quality and history into the clash, the Lionesses are determined to write a new chapter of success.

“There’s mutual respect between the teams,” said Williamson. “We’re not coming in as underdogs—we’re coming in ready.”
