Club América captain Henry Martín is back in full training and could feature in Saturday’s Clásico Nacional against Chivas, with Las Águilas chasing their 100th win in Mexico’s fiercest rivalry.
Club América have been handed a major boost ahead of Clásico Nacional No. 262 as star striker Henry Martín returned to full training on Tuesday. The 32-year-old, who has endured a difficult run of injuries ranging from Achilles issues to a recent knee problem, looks ready to lead the line when Las Águilas face Chivas at the Estadio Azteca.
Martín, limited to just 20 appearances and two goals in 2025, is still only three goals shy of reaching 100 with América since joining in 2018. He featured in Sunday’s 3-1 friendly defeat to D.C. United and came through unscathed, raising hopes that he can play a decisive role in Mexico’s biggest rivalry.
The Bigger Picture
América currently sit second in Liga MX with 17 points, while Chivas have struggled near the bottom with just four. Yet history warns against complacency: the Clásico Nacional rarely follows league form, with dramatic upsets a defining feature of the rivalry.
Head coach André Jardine was without several internationals at Tuesday’s session, including Luis Ángel Malagón, Erick Sánchez, Brian Rodríguez, Rodrigo Aguirre, Sebastián Cáceres, and Alejandro Zendejas. Midfielder Jonathan dos Santos also missed training due to a routine medical check but is not expected to be sidelined.
Meanwhile, one of the players to watch could be Allan Saint-Maximin. The French winger has scored twice in recent substitute appearances and was rewarded with a start against D.C. United. His flair and unpredictability could earn him a starting spot in Saturday’s clásico.
Did You Know?
The clash carries extra weight this weekend. América have the chance to record their 100th official victory over Chivas, with the all-time head-to-head reading:
- América wins: 99
- Chivas wins: 80
- Draws: 82
What’s Next?
The 262nd edition of the Clásico Nacional takes place this Saturday, and with Henry Martín back in contention, América will look to etch their name in history with a century of wins over their eternal rivals.
