Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano Enjoys Triumphant Mexico Return as San Diego FC Star Eyes 2026 World Cup

San Diego FC winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano says his return to the Mexico national team has been “wonderful” after injury struggles, as he looks to inspire El Tri ahead of the 2026 World Cup while chasing MLS Cup glory.

After a long and frustrating spell away from international duty due to injury setbacks, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has finally returned to the Mexico national team — and the San Diego FC star couldn’t be happier.

The winger has been in sensational form in Major League Soccer, leading his new club’s charge in their debut season. With his sharpness restored, Lozano has been welcomed back into El Tri, a timely boost as the nation prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Back in the Green Shirt

Lozano admitted that his absence from the national setup had been difficult, but he’s relishing the chance to wear the Mexico jersey again.

“I had a long period where I couldn’t go to the national team due to health issues,” Lozano told EFE. “But coming back was wonderful. They welcomed me so well — the fans, the coaching staff, the players. They’re building a great group, and that’s beautiful. The goals are clear: to have a great World Cup because it’s at home, and we have to work very hard for that.”

The 30-year-old’s numbers this season underline his resurgence: nine goals and 10 assists in 25 matches, helping San Diego FC sit top of the Western Conference standings.

Chasing MLS Cup Glory

Lozano also praised the impact of head coach Mikey Varas, who has guided San Diego FC to a stunning first campaign in MLS.

“We’ve done a great job, we’re on the right path. I’m very happy with the team and with myself,” Lozano said. “Hopefully, we can stay on this path and reach the playoffs in the best possible way.”

The Story Behind “Chucky”

Lozano also shed light on the nickname that has followed him throughout his career.

“When I arrived at Pachuca, I liked to scare my teammates in the room, play pranks on them,” he explained with a smile. “Two of my teammates asked if I’d like to be called Chucky. I said I had no problem with it, that it didn’t bother me. From that moment, it stuck, and it’s never gone away. Honestly, I love it.”

Mexico’s Road Ahead

Lozano’s return comes at an important time for Mexico, who will face Colombia on October 11 at AT&T Stadium in Texas and Ecuador on October 15 at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara as they continue preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

With his form peaking and his confidence restored, Lozano looks ready to play a central role in both San Diego FC’s MLS Cup push and Mexico’s home World Cup ambitions.
