Rising Star Lily Yohannes Joins OL Lyon with Title Ambitions

Lily Yohannes, one of Europe’s most exciting young talents, has officially joined French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in a record-breaking move from Ajax. Speaking at a EURO 2025 event in Zurich, the 18-year-old midfielder expressed her excitement and pride in signing with one of the most successful clubs in women’s football history.

A Milestone Move: From Amsterdam to Lyon

Yohannes, who began her journey with Ajax at just 13 years old, broke into the senior squad in 2023 at the age of 16. In only two seasons, she racked up 11 goals and seven assists in 39 Eredivisie appearances—impressive numbers that drew the attention of top European clubs.

Her summer switch to OL Lyon came with a €450,000 price tag, setting a record fee for a player transferring from the Dutch Eredivisie. Despite interest from elite teams across the continent, Yohannes chose Lyon, citing the club’s rich history and inspiring vision.

Childhood Dream Realized

“This club means everything to me,” Yohannes told Flashscore at the Adidas presentation for the official EURO 2025 final match ball. “I’ve loved OL Lyon since I was a little girl. The moment I heard about their project, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Describing Lyon as an “incredible club,” Yohannes shared her eagerness to begin training alongside world-class teammates and under a top-tier coaching staff.

Teammate’s Words Sealed the Deal

Yohannes revealed that her move to Lyon was influenced by fellow U.S. Women’s National Team player Lindsey Heaps, who offered glowing recommendations about the club and its culture.

“She had nothing but positive things to say,” Yohannes said. “That really reassured me and made the decision even easier.”

Looking Ahead: Goals, Growth, and Glory

While she hasn’t yet had a formal sit-down with Lyon manager Jonatan Gilardez, Yohannes is eager to work under the accomplished coach, who boasts a stellar résumé in women’s football. For now, the focus is on adaptation and integration.

“My goal is to settle in quickly, get used to the new environment, and help the team keep winning trophies,” she added.

Flashing a smile—and a bit of her growing French vocabulary—Yohannes concluded with enthusiasm: “Yes! Allez Lyon!”
