Lionel Messi is recovering from an injury and will miss Inter Miami's next match.

Inter Miami will be without star forward Lionel Messi for their highly anticipated clash against in-state rivals Orlando City this Sunday. Head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that the Argentine icon is still nursing a minor muscle issue and will not be risked as the team navigates a critical stretch of their season.

Messi to Miss Orlando Showdown Amid Injury Recovery

Lionel Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, will not feature in Inter Miami’s MLS showdown with Orlando City, one of the most anticipated fixtures on the Florida soccer calendar. Although the injury isn’t considered serious, Mascherano made it clear that resting Messi is the prudent decision given what lies ahead for the club.

Leo won’t be available tomorrow, He’s doing well, but it would be unwise to bring him to Orlando with everything coming up on our schedule. We’re optimistic he’ll be back soon.

Mascherano stated on Saturday.

The minor muscle injury in Messi’s upper right leg occurred during Miami’s Leagues Cup win over Necaxa on August 2. He subsequently missed their final group-stage match and will now sit out Sunday’s derby.

Upcoming Fixtures Demand Caution

Inter Miami’s decision to rest their captain is likely influenced by a packed fixture list over the next week. Following the Orlando matchup, the Herons host the LA Galaxy on August 16 before facing Mexican giants Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals just three days later.

With crucial points and potential silverware on the line, Miami is being cautious with their most valuable player’s fitness.

Team Momentum Remains Strong Without Messi

Despite Messi’s absence, Inter Miami has shown signs of resilience and depth. Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, a recent addition to the squad, made an immediate impact by scoring his debut goal in a 3-1 victory over Pumas UNAM—securing the team’s place in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

That result, coupled with strong performances from other key players, has kept Miami competitive. The club currently sits fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, trailing first-place Philadelphia by eight points. Crucially, they also have three games in hand and maintain a one-point edge over Orlando.
