Liverpool Continues Defensive Search as Transfer Saga Heats Up

As Liverpool’s summer transfer spree continues, the Reds are turning their attention to bolstering their backline. With Newcastle United attempting to swoop in on Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, Jurgen Klopp’s side is now reportedly keeping tabs on Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins. While Collins remains a long shot, his name is firmly on Liverpool’s radar as they assess defensive reinforcements before the window closes.

Liverpool’s Transfer Strategy: A Focus on Defense

Following the departure of young defender Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool is keen to bring in an additional centre-back to solidify their defensive unit. The Reds have already made high-profile moves this summer, signing Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the hunt for a commanding presence at the heart of defense remains ongoing.

Their primary target has been England international Marc Guehi, who is open to leaving Crystal Palace with just a year remaining on his contract. But Newcastle, who had bids rejected for Guehi last year, have revived their interest and are hoping to strike a late-window deal—potentially for a fee closer to £40 million rather than Palace’s £50 million asking price.

Nathan Collins Enters the Frame

With Newcastle threatening to outbid them for Guehi, Liverpool is reportedly casting a wider net. According to GIVEMESPORT, the Reds have identified Brentford’s Nathan Collins as a player of interest.

Collins, 24, joined Brentford from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £23 million in the summer of 2023 and quickly established himself as a key figure in their defense. Last season, he made 33 appearances across all competitions, earning recognition for his aerial dominance, tactical discipline, and leadership qualities.

Despite Liverpool’s interest, a move appears unlikely—at least for now. Brentford are said to have “no intention” of selling the Irish international, who still has four years left on his contract. Sources close to the situation suggest that the club’s stance is firm: Collins is not for sale, and there’s been no official approach from Liverpool at this stage.

Alexander Isak Update: Big Bid Rejected, Talks Ongoing

In parallel to their defensive search, Liverpool is also monitoring the situation around Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward has reportedly expressed a desire to join the Reds, and Liverpool have tested the waters with a substantial £110 million bid, including add-ons. However, Newcastle rebuffed the offer, holding out for a valuation closer to £150 million.

“I think it has come to the point where Newcastle understand a deal might have to be done, provided they get the right financial offer.”

Journalist David Ornstein reported that Newcastle may be softening their stance, telling BBC Radio Five Live

This ongoing uncertainty surrounding Isak and Guehi has likely influenced Liverpool’s strategy to explore alternative targets like Collins, even if only tentatively.

Conclusion: No Deal Imminent, But Options Open

While Liverpool’s interest in Nathan Collins highlights their proactive approach, any deal seems distant unless Brentford’s position changes drastically. With competition from Newcastle intensifying across multiple fronts, the Reds may be forced to act decisively in the coming weeks—or risk missing out on their top defensive targets.
