Manchester United’s Revival Hinges on Amorim, Says Former Striker Louis Saha

Manchester United legend Louis Saha has thrown his support behind Ruben Amorim, backing the Portuguese manager to steer the Red Devils out of their prolonged decline. Saha, who spent five seasons at Old Trafford, believes Amorim has the vision, character, and tactical acumen needed to rebuild a team that has drifted far from its former glory.

A Decade of Decline at Old Trafford

Since winning their last Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2012/13 season, Manchester United have endured over a decade of inconsistency, managerial missteps, and underwhelming performances. Saha didn’t mince words, labeling the current state of the club as a “real crisis,” worsened by poor signings and short-sighted coaching decisions.

The Frenchman expressed his dismay at United’s 15th-place finish last season — their worst since the 1973/74 campaign, when they were relegated. “It’s painful to watch,” Saha admitted during a youth football camp in Albufeira, Portugal.

Amorim Tipped as the Right Man for the Job

Appointed in late 2024 following a successful stint with Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim has impressed Saha with his honesty, communication skills, and clearly defined footballing philosophy. The 40-year-old coach is tasked with revitalizing a side that has lost its identity and competitiveness on both domestic and European stages.

“He has the right mindset to perform the surgery the club needs,” said Saha. “It won’t be easy, but with the right players and support, Amorim can do an excellent job.”

Reclaiming Fear and Respect at Old Trafford

Saha believes that beyond tactics and transfers, Amorim’s mission must include restoring Old Trafford’s intimidating aura. “Teams come to Manchester now thinking they can win. That shouldn’t happen,” he stressed. “Old Trafford must become a graveyard for visiting teams again.”

He emphasized the need for a cohesive playing style and a return to the club’s core values: respect, fear, and dominance, especially at home.

Bruno Fernandes: Carrying the Torch Under Pressure

While he sees issues with the squad’s structure and morale, Saha praised Bruno Fernandes for his leadership and consistent performances. The midfielder has notched 98 goals and 84 assists in six seasons, often being the glue that holds the team together amid chaos.

“The pressure on Bruno is immense — far more than previous captains faced. He’s had to lead through instability,” Saha explained. He highlighted how Fernandes has filled a role that captains like Roy Keane once held under vastly different, more stable circumstances.

Despite the challenges, Saha insists Fernandes should continue to lead the team with the same determination and authenticity.

Dalot and the Need for Confidence

Saha also named Diogo Dalot as a player to watch this coming season. The Portuguese right-back had a standout campaign in 2023/24 but struggled to maintain form amid a shaky team setup last year. With better structure and support, Saha believes Dalot can offer a strong attacking outlet from the back.

A Path Back to Glory?

Reflecting on the club’s golden era under Sir Alex Ferguson, Saha recalled a time when every player was known inside and out by the coaching staff — a level of detail he feels is missing today. “It was like a symphony, everything worked perfectly,” he said.

As United attempt to climb back toward the summit of English football, Saha is hopeful but realistic. Success will require time, smart recruitment, and unity under Amorim’s leadership — but with the right formula, the glory days may not be out of reach.
