Manchester United are weighing up a sensational return for former academy star James Garner as part of a broader strategy to reinforce their midfield. The Red Devils, grappling with underperformance and aging legs in the middle of the park, are also intensifying their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson—despite interest from Newcastle United.

Midfield Struggles Prompt Urgent Transfer Rethink
Manchester United’s decision to avoid signing a true defensive midfielder in the summer has proven costly. With Casemiro struggling for form and fitness, and Manuel Ugarte failing to meet expectations, manager Erik ten Hag is left with limited options. Kobbie Mainoo, while highly rated, isn’t seen as a long-term solution alongside Bruno Fernandes in a two-man midfield.

The club’s attempt to sign Brighton’s Carlos Baleba late in the summer didn’t materialize, although interest in the 21-year-old remains. However, the focus has now shifted to a more attainable and Premier League-proven target.

United Move Ahead in Elliot Anderson Race
Elliot Anderson, currently with Nottingham Forest, has emerged as United’s top midfield target. Originally sold by Newcastle United for £35 million to help the Magpies balance their financial books, Anderson is now attracting renewed interest from his former club. However, Manchester United appear to be gaining ground in the transfer race.

According to reports from indykaila News, United officials recently met with CAA Stellar—the agency representing Anderson—to discuss their long-term project. The midfielder is reportedly open to a move and could leave Forest either in January or next summer, depending on negotiations.

Shock Return for James Garner Under Consideration
While pursuing Anderson, United are also exploring the possibility of re-signing James Garner from Everton. The 24-year-old left Old Trafford in 2022 for £9 million but has since developed into a consistent performer under David Moyes at Goodison Park.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey confirmed that Garner has caught the attention of United’s recruitment department. “They always monitor academy graduates, and Garner is having a standout season,” Bailey noted. With his Everton contract set to expire at season’s end, multiple clubs are circling—though Everton are in talks to extend his deal, making a free transfer unlikely.

Final Thoughts
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gaining momentum, with both short-term and long-term targets now firmly in their sights. Whether they bring back a familiar face in James Garner or secure the rising talent of Elliot Anderson, changes are clearly on the horizon at Old Trafford.
