Man United Rethink Bruno Fernandes Future Amid Saudi Interest as Zirkzee Also Linked with January Exit

Man United Captain Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United could be preparing for a major shake-up in 2026 as fresh reports suggest the club is reconsidering its stance on captain Bruno Fernandes. Despite being one of the few bright spots in a dismal 2024/25 campaign, the Portuguese playmaker may now be allowed to leave for the Saudi Pro League. Meanwhile, striker Joshua Zirkzee is also attracting attention ahead of the January transfer window, hinting at further changes within Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Man United Reassess Fernandes’ Role Despite Recent Commitment

Bruno Fernandes was heavily linked with a summer switch to Saudi Arabia, with Al-Hilal reportedly offering around £100 million to secure his services. At the time, Manchester United left the decision up to the midfielder, who ultimately chose to stay at Old Trafford for the 2025/26 season.

Despite Fernandes reaffirming his loyalty to the Red Devils, Saudi clubs remain vigilant and are reportedly monitoring the situation for a potential January move. According to Football Insider, United have now made a “shock U-turn” and are open to sanctioning Fernandes’ departure should the right offer come in.

Poor Form Could Prompt Club to Cash In

United’s disastrous 2024/25 campaign — which saw them finish 15th and miss out on all silverware — has left the club contemplating a significant rebuild. Former chief scout Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, believes Fernandes could be sold if United’s current season continues to disappoint.

“If United are mid-table again come season’s end and an offer around £100 million arrives, it will be hard for them to say no,” Brown explained. “That kind of money would allow the club to reinvest in key areas of the squad.”

Brown added that much depends on United’s trajectory this season. If Fernandes leads the team back into European contention, the club may hold onto him. Otherwise, a sale could be seen as a strategic reset.

Zirkzee Set for Surprise January Exit?

In a separate development, striker Joshua Zirkzee is also being linked with a potential departure. The Dutch forward has struggled to break into the starting XI following the arrival of Benjamin Šeško and has largely played a supporting role.

While United offloaded Rasmus Højlund in the summer to make room for Zirkzee, the situation hasn’t unfolded as expected. Now, Football Insider reports that West Ham are considering a January move for the 24-year-old, though they’ll face competition from Serie A giants Juventus and Como.

A Pivotal Transfer Window Ahead for United

As the January window approaches, Manchester United look poised to make key decisions that could reshape their future. Whether Fernandes departs for a record fee or Zirkzee seeks regular minutes elsewhere, United’s strategy suggests a willingness to evolve — and possibly offload big names — to return to competitiveness both in England and in Europe.
