Marcus Rashford Confirms Barcelona Was Always His First Choice After January Move Fell Through

Marcus Rashford has revealed that a move to Barcelona was his preferred destination as far back as January, but financial constraints blocked the winter switch. Now, after a brief revival on loan at Aston Villa, the England international finally gets his chance in Spain—and says it already feels like home.

Marcus Rashford’s unveiling as a Barcelona player was as revealing as it was emotional. The 26-year-old forward confirmed that his loan move from Manchester United had been months in the making—delayed by circumstances in January, but finally materializing ahead of the 2025–26 La Liga season.

Rashford admitted that he had hoped to join Barcelona during the winter window but financial and logistical hurdles meant a move couldn’t be completed. Instead, he joined Aston Villa on loan, where he regained confidence and form during a productive six-month spell under Unai Emery.

“Not difficult,” Rashford said when asked if the decision to join Barcelona was a tough one. “I was clear on my preference from the very beginning, actually from January, but it didn’t work out… so I went to Aston Villa. I enjoyed myself a lot, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

The move to Barcelona brings Rashford’s long association with Manchester United to a temporary close, though his farewell was respectful. “I don’t have anything bad to say about Manchester United. It is an important part of my life. I wish them all the best and I hope they are successful in the future.”

Barcelona have secured Rashford on a season-long loan with an option to buy next summer—a clause that suggests both player and club see this as more than a short-term arrangement. He has been handed the iconic No.14 shirt, worn previously by Thierry Henry, a childhood idol of Rashford’s.

The fit, according to Rashford, already feels right: “It’s a family club, something I’m used to from my past. It feels like home… to play for this football club is a special moment for me.”

However, his debut will have to wait. Barcelona’s pre-season preparations have hit a snag, with the cancellation of their friendly against Vissel Kobe casting doubt over their entire Asia tour. La Liga kicks off on August 16, with Barcelona set to begin away at Mallorca.

While the road to Camp Nou may have been delayed, Rashford has finally arrived—and with his future uncertain at Manchester United, his Spanish chapter could be just beginning.
