Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions that Liverpool are out of the Premier League title race, insisting the Reds will “come back strong.” Despite recent struggles, Guardiola believes Jurgen Klopp’s side remains a major threat this season. The City boss also heaped praise on Matheus Nunes, predicting the versatile midfielder could evolve into one of the world’s best right-backs.

Guardiola Backs Liverpool to Recover from Recent Dip

Liverpool’s title challenge has faltered after a flying start to the season. Having spent over £400 million during the summer and winning their first five league games, the Reds were widely seen as favourites to retain their crown. However, four consecutive defeats across all competitions have raised concerns about their form and title credentials.
Meanwhile, both Arsenal and Manchester City have seized momentum, climbing to the top two spots in the Premier League table after eight matches. But Guardiola remains confident Liverpool’s title hopes are far from over.
“People said after two or three games that we [City] were out, and now they say Liverpool are done. I tell you—they will be back,” Guardiola said. “I never make judgments after five matches. Let’s see after 10 or 15 games where everyone stands. Liverpool and Arsenal will definitely be there, and hopefully, we’ll be there too.”

While Erling Haaland continues to lead City’s attack, Guardiola has been equally impressed by the development of Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese midfielder, who joined from Wolves, has recently been deployed in a defensive role, and Guardiola believes he has the potential to excel there.
“Matheus can be an incredible right-back,” Guardiola said. “He’s a holding midfielder with great physicality, and if he stays focused, he can become one of the best in the world in that position. It’s just about his mindset—believing he can do it.”
The manager praised Nunes’ adaptability and impact in recent matches, highlighting how his athleticism and intelligence make him a valuable asset on the flanks.

Guardiola on Aston Villa: “One of Our Toughest Away Games”

Looking ahead to this weekend’s Premier League clash, Manchester City travel to Villa Park to face Unai Emery’s in-form Aston Villa. Guardiola acknowledged that his team has struggled against Emery’s side in previous encounters but hopes for a turnaround.
“They were much better than us in our last two visits,” Guardiola admitted. “Unai Emery is an exceptional coach—tactically smart, consistent, and incredibly well-prepared.”
He also praised Villa’s organization, physicality, and rapid counter-attacking style, calling them “one of the toughest away games” City face each season. Guardiola added that Villa’s structure, pressing, and quick transitions make them a formidable opponent.

As Manchester City aim to maintain their winning streak, Guardiola’s words serve as both a warning and a compliment—Liverpool are far from finished, and rivals should not underestimate them. At the same time, his faith in Matheus Nunes highlights City’s continued focus on developing versatile, world-class talent across all positions.
