West Ham face a crucial Premier League test as they travel to Elland Road on Friday to take on Leeds United. Following a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Brentford, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have little room for error as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone.

West Ham Desperate for Three Points

The Hammers sit second from bottom with just one win in eight league matches. With pressure mounting, securing three points is non-negotiable. Leeds, meanwhile, are also fighting to distance themselves from the drop zone, ensuring a tense encounter where nerves could play a decisive role.

West Ham’s struggles in front of goal are stark, having netted only two times in their last five games. Jarrod Bowen remains the standout attacking threat, but Lucas Paqueta and Crysencio Summerville must step up if the Hammers are to improve their scoring record.

Leeds’ Recent Form at Elland Road

Leeds have gone winless in their last three home fixtures, but they have scored in each. If they continue this trend, West Ham will face an additional attacking challenge. While West Ham have scored just six goals this season, historical head-to-head stats give them some confidence: the Hammers have scored at least twice in five of their last six meetings with Leeds, winning four and drawing one.

However, West Ham’s 76 shots this season rank 19th in the league, highlighting a need for greater offensive output. Defensively, they are the division’s leakiest side, conceding 18 goals, with set-pieces remaining a notable vulnerability.

Selection Puzzles and Key Players

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team selection has raised eyebrows. James Ward-Prowse, the squad’s top creator with 12 chances, has been largely overlooked, while El Hadji Malick Diouf, who leads the team with three assists, was on the bench against Brentford. Callum Wilson, one of only three scorers this season alongside Bowen and Paqueta, also remained unused, a decision critics may question.

Late-Game Drama Expected

Timing could be crucial. West Ham have tended to score in the final 15 minutes, while Leeds are most dangerous before and just after halftime. Both teams have also experienced multiple goalless matches this season, meaning a low-scoring draw cannot be ruled out. Leeds’ record of winning whenever they score first contrasts sharply with West Ham’s inability to recover from conceding early.

Leeds Must Improve Conversion

Leeds dominated possession and created numerous opportunities in their last match against Burnley but failed to convert, underlining a season-long struggle with finishing. They have taken 104 shots so far, ranking seventh in the league, yet their conversion rate is only 6.7%, among the lowest in the Premier League. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in particular, has squandered five major chances despite scoring just once this season.

Injury Updates

Both sides are likely to be missing three key players. West Ham will be without Konstantinos Mavropanos, George Earthy, and Niclas Fullkrug, while Leeds will be without Harry Gray, Noah Okafor, and Willy Gnonto. These absences could influence squad rotation and tactical approaches for Friday’s showdown.

The clash promises tension, with West Ham desperate for a rebound and Leeds aiming to capitalize on their home advantage. Expect a game where fine margins and finishing could decide the outcome.
