Manchester United boss Rúben Amorim has dismissed comments from Liverpool’s Arne Slot following United’s 2–1 triumph at Anfield, insisting he doesn’t need anyone else to evaluate his team’s style or tactics. The Portuguese coach also admitted one of his summer signings has exceeded early expectations.
Amorim Responds to Slot’s “Low Block” Comments
Manchester United’s impressive 2–1 win over Liverpool marked a turning point for Rúben Amorim’s side, ending a long drought at Anfield. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire sealed the victory, with United executing a direct and disciplined game plan that left Liverpool frustrated.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, still reeling from his team’s fourth straight defeat in all competitions, appeared to take a dig at United’s tactics, saying:
“It is always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block and mainly plays the long ball.”
Slot later clarified that his words were meant as a “compliment” rather than criticism, explaining that United’s structure made them tough opponents.
However, Amorim showed little interest in the Dutchman’s explanation.
“I don’t care what Slot is saying,” Amorim told reporters. “I can watch the game and say we can do better, and we need to do better in the future. But sometimes you need to adapt to the game. I don’t need anyone to evaluate my team — I can evaluate my team.”
Summer Signings Impress in Key Moments
Manchester United’s summer overhaul is starting to bear fruit, with new arrivals Senne Lammens, Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo all playing pivotal roles in the Anfield win.
Lammens, in particular, has caught Amorim’s attention. The young Belgian goalkeeper, brought in as an upgrade on André Onana, has shown remarkable composure under pressure since his arrival.
“It’s been a little surprising,” Amorim admitted. “There was a lot of speculation around our goalkeepers, and although he’s not a kid anymore, he’s still young. He’s coped really well with the pressure, he’s composed, and his ability to play with both feet is vital — especially when facing teams like Liverpool where we needed a more direct approach.”
The United boss added that while he expected Lammens to be talented, his quick adaptation and maturity have exceeded expectations.
A New Era Taking Shape at Old Trafford
With four straight wins and growing confidence in Amorim’s system, Manchester United appear to be finding their rhythm under the Portuguese tactician. His willingness to blend tactical pragmatism with individual brilliance has earned both results and respect — even if not from his Premier League rivals.
