Ruben Amorim warns Kobbie Mainoo is ‘uncomfortable’ at Man Utd but tips him to follow Vitinha’s path to greatness

Ruben Amorim admits Kobbie Mainoo is “uncomfortable” with his reduced role at Manchester United but insists the England midfielder has the talent to become one of the best in the world, comparing him to PSG star Vitinha.

Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Manchester United has become a growing topic of debate after head coach Ruben Amorim admitted the youngster is “uncomfortable” with his lack of minutes this season. Despite the setback, Amorim is convinced Mainoo has the ability to rise to the very top, even drawing comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha.

From Euro 2024 breakthrough to bench role

Just over a year ago, Mainoo was hailed as one of the brightest prospects in English football. He shone during United’s 2023-24 campaign, racking up 32 appearances before becoming a key figure in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, where he started both the semi-final and final.

But life under Amorim has been starkly different. The 19-year-old has failed to start any of United’s opening three Premier League matches, making just one appearance from the bench.

“He’s not used to fighting for his place, maybe. He’s uncomfortable, but he’s a very good kid. He wants to learn,” Amorim told reporters. “Sometimes it’s hard to push different things from the players.”

Amorim’s Vitinha comparison

Amorim was quick to highlight Mainoo’s potential despite his current struggles, citing the rise of Vitinha as inspiration.

“I remember Vitinha was not playing for Wolverhampton,” Amorim said. “Nowadays, you can see that Vitinha is maybe the best midfielder in the world. So you never know. Something can happen sometimes.”

The United boss admitted his tactical approach differs from that of predecessor Erik ten Hag, which has made Mainoo’s adaptation more difficult. “Sometimes I expect more from Kobbie Mainoo. Sometimes, maybe if I start him more, he’s going to get hard to take out. But I need to go with what I’m feeling.”

Transfer saga and future doubts

Mainoo’s frustration almost boiled over in the summer transfer window. The midfielder was linked with Tottenham, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Napoli, with rumours suggesting he even pushed for a move. United, however, blocked any exit – including a potential loan – keeping him at Old Trafford for now.

But with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Mainoo knows regular playing time is essential if he is to remain part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. January could prove decisive, with speculation already building around a possible winter exit.
