Man Utd Begin Talks for Hjulmand as Midfield Reinforcements Take Priority
Manchester United have launched their pursuit of Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, submitting an opening offer as they continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new Premier League season. With several high-profile departures and signings already in motion, the Red Devils are pushing forward in their hunt for a reliable defensive midfielder—and Hjulmand appears to be high on their list.
Hjulmand Eager for Premier League Return Under Amorim
According to reports from Italy, Manchester United have made an initial €40 million bid for Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who currently plays under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP. The 26-year-old is reportedly keen to reunite with Amorim, who recently took over as United’s head coach.
Although Hjulmand’s current release clause stands at €80 million, Sporting may be willing to negotiate down to €50 million. However, the player’s representatives believe a valuation closer to €30-40 million is more realistic, and are in ongoing discussions with the club to make the move possible.
The midfielder, known for his tactical intelligence and strong presence in the center of the pitch, is actively pushing for a transfer and views a reunion with Amorim in the Premier League as an ideal next step in his career.
Competition and Strategic Moves in the Market
Manchester United are not the only club monitoring Hjulmand’s situation. Juventus have also expressed interest in the Sporting star as they look to replace Douglas Luiz, who is reportedly eyeing an exit. Nevertheless, Amorim’s preference to bring Hjulmand to England could give United the upper hand in negotiations.
United have already secured the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon, signaling a clear intention to strengthen under Amorim. However, the club is still targeting additions in the striker, defensive midfield, and goalkeeper positions.
Outgoings Continue to Shape United’s Transfer Strategy
While fresh faces are arriving, United have also shifted their focus to offloading players. Marcus Rashford recently departed on loan to Barcelona, while offers have been received for both Antony and Jadon Sancho. The club is also exploring permanent exits for Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia.
These outgoing moves are expected to free up both wages and squad space, potentially accelerating United’s pursuit of Hjulmand and other targets.
Rio Ferdinand Backs Baleba Over Hjulmand
Despite United’s growing interest in Hjulmand, club legend Rio Ferdinand has thrown his support behind a different midfield option—Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand praised Baleba as a complete box-to-box midfielder who could bring energy, discipline, and versatility to United’s midfield.
“There’s only one name I’m thinking about,” Ferdinand said. “Baleba’s got everything—legs, energy, tactical awareness. If I had the budget, I’d go for him every day of the week.”
While Baleba remains an alternative target, United’s current momentum suggests Hjulmand is their top priority for now.
