Eddie Howe looks frustrated during a Premier League match.

Newcastle United are scrambling for a new goalkeeper after missing out on James Trafford, who is set to rejoin Manchester City. Now, the Magpies have turned their attention to former Arsenal and current Southampton keeper Aaron Ramsdale, with talks progressing on a loan deal that includes a potential permanent transfer.

Newcastle’s Summer Transfer Setbacks Continue

It’s been a frustrating transfer window for Newcastle United. Despite securing winger Anthony Elanga, the club has missed out on several key targets including Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and most recently, James Trafford.

Trafford had long been linked with a move to St. James’ Park, but the English shot-stopper is now finalizing a £27 million return to Manchester City from Burnley. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the 21-year-old underwent the main part of his medical on Monday, sealing the Magpies’ disappointment.

Ramsdale Becomes Priority After Trafford Deal Collapse

With Trafford no longer an option, Newcastle have swiftly shifted their focus to Aaron Ramsdale. The England international, currently with Southampton, has emerged as a top alternative, and talks are already underway.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reported that Ramsdale is in direct discussions with Newcastle. Notably, Ramsdale previously worked under Eddie Howe during his time at Bournemouth, which could help facilitate a move.

Downie posted on X:

“EXCLUSIVE: Aaron Ramsdale is in talks to sign for Newcastle. The England international played under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth and #NUFC were interested in signing him last summer.”

Deal Structure: Loan With Option to Buy

The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that Newcastle have tabled an offer structured as an initial loan with an option to buy. Southampton, however, are reportedly pushing for a permanent transfer but may agree to a loan if a significant fee is involved.

According to Ornstein:

“Newcastle have made an offer for an initial loan with an option to buy. Southampton’s preference would be for a straight sale but in the event of a loan move would want to secure a significant loan fee. Talks are ongoing between the clubs but there is no agreement as yet.”

Fabrizio Romano also added that Ramsdale has already given his approval to join Newcastle.

“Aaron Ramsdale already said yes to Newcastle and official bid has been sent to Southampton. High loan fee, salary covered and buy option clause. Southampton open to accepting but want higher fee. Deal expected to happen.”

Uncertainty Looms Over Isak’s Future

Complicating matters further, Newcastle might also face the departure of star striker Alexander Isak, who has reportedly expressed interest in a move amid links to Liverpool. While nothing is confirmed, the Magpies are considering potential replacements such as Benjamin Sesko, Yoane Wissa, and Ollie Watkins.
