Rio Ferdinand Backs Mason Mount to Thrive at Manchester United After Injury Woes

Rio Ferdinand believes Mason Mount can still be a top player for Manchester United, despite a difficult first season and injury struggles. The midfielder is ready to return to full fitness for the 2025-26 campaign.

Injury-Plagued Season

Mount’s debut season at Manchester United, following a £60 million ($76 million) move from Chelsea in July 2023, was marred by injury issues that limited him to just 11 starts across all competitions. As a result, his impact was significantly reduced, leaving many questioning his potential at the club.

Ferdinand’s Confidence in Mount

However, former United defender Ferdinand is confident that Mount can come good for the Red Devils, now that he is fully fit and showing promising signs during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ferdinand said: “I saw him out in Chicago and asked him how he was feeling. He’s been robbed of minutes through injury, which has been disappointing to see. Being injured and out of action can be incredibly tough on a player, especially at a new club. It can take your soul away, and I’m sure Mason has had some dark moments.”

Ferdinand believes that Mount will return to form and be like a new signing for manager Ruben Amorim in the 2025-26 season. He continued: “He has the quality, the work ethic, the legs, and the ability to be a top player. Whenever he’s been fit, he’s been played, especially at Chelsea where he was crucial, even in their Champions League-winning campaign.”

Looking Ahead to 2025-26

With a full pre-season behind him, Mount will be hoping for an injury-free 2025-26 campaign and the opportunity to show his worth to Amorim’s side. United, who finished 15th last season, will need all hands on deck to improve this term, and Mount’s potential could be a key asset if he stays fit.
